Flatiron Building Now Offers Residential Living After 124 Years

For the first time in 124 years, the iconic Flatiron Building in New York is available for residential living.

The landmark has been transformed into luxury condominiums, with the first unit listed over the weekend for a price of $16 million, according to recent reports.

This spacious 11th-floor unit spans 3,828 square feet, which breaks down to about $4,179 per square foot. It includes four bedrooms and four bathrooms.

This condo is just the beginning, as it marks the first of 38 residential units to emerge from a multi-year renovation, spearheaded by Corcoran Sunshine.

The extensive project has seen the restoration of the building’s terracotta and limestone exterior. Remarkably, a team painstakingly replaced 1,000 windows by hand and revitalized the six-foot cornice atop the structure.

The Flatiron redevelopment, led by Solgente Group and the Brodsky Organization, is expected to wrap up this fall.

Originally designed by architect Daniel Burnham, the Flatiron was one of the first steel skyscrapers in the city.

Designer William Sofield, of Studio Sofield, undertook a complete interior overhaul. He aimed to blend modern aesthetics with the charm of the 20th century.

“The redesigned interior pays homage to craftsmanship, texture, and history,” Sofield noted in a statement. “We’ve been mindful of how best to honor this site’s integrity and its significance in the city.”

Sofield’s design choices reflect the building’s historic features like cast iron railings and mosaic marble floors.

The new condos occupy the southern end of the Flatiron, with certain units facing different directions. Interestingly, one adjoining room provides a view of the building’s famous northern side.

Guests can access a tastefully designed tiled vestibule via a direct lift.

The open-plan kitchen boasts modern flush-panel cabinetry and high-end Gaggenau appliances, while the primary suite is equipped with custom-curved windows that elegantly fit the building’s unique shape.

The primary room features its own walk-in closet along with a bathroom that includes a deep soaking tub, offering both practicality and style.

Originally known as the Fuller Building, it was completed in 1902 and has since become a hallmark of New York’s architectural landscape.

Future residents will enjoy amenities like a sleek wellness center, which features a 60-foot lap pool, a billiards room, and a piano lounge, ensuring a luxurious living experience.

It’s fascinating to think this unit is making its first appearance on the market now. Over the years, the Flatiron Building has been home to numerous commercial tenants, from restaurants to publishers, contributing to its rich history.

In addition to the historic elements, modern enhancements such as radiant heat floors in the bathrooms and adjustable lighting throughout the unit make it an appealing choice for prospective buyers.
