Mark Walter’s Company to Reduce Investment Amid Investigation

Mark Walter’s holding company, TWG Global, announced on Tuesday that it intends to reduce its financial stake in the billionaire’s business by as much as $6.5 billion. This decision comes in light of increasing scrutiny regarding his financial practices.

As part of this adjustment, TWG Global has agreed to exchange up to $6.5 billion of investments related to Delaware Life for a corresponding amount of assets deemed independent.

According to reports from The Wall Street Journal published on Sunday, federal prosecutors along with the SEC are delving into Walter’s business operations to assess whether he and his firms engaged in fraudulent activities. Specifically, they are looking into whether substantial financial arrangements with insurance companies he controlled were obscured.

A spokesperson for TWG Global stated, “Group 1001 Insurance Company is actively collaborating with the Delaware Department of Insurance to address the identified investments, and TWG is committed to resolving this issue satisfactorily.” This comes after the Delaware Life firm received subpoenas for a grand jury investigation connected to activities that the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York is conducting.

Regulators seem particularly interested in whether some private credit investments that Delaware Life and Clear Spring Life categorized as independent were actually affiliated with Walter’s interests.

Following the receipt of the subpoena, Delaware Life undertook an internal evaluation and found discrepancies in how certain investments were classified.

Recently, S&P Global shifted its outlook for Delaware Life to negative after the firm had to restate its financial reports and reclassify various private credit investments as linked to associated companies.

In a statement from Tuesday, TWG Global reiterated that the capital and liquidity of Group 1001 Insurance Company remain robust.

Interestingly, Walter, aged 66, has also made headlines this month for his agreement to sell the Los Angeles Lakers to Joshua Kushner and Bob Iger in what would be an unprecedented $12.5 billion deal.
