Introducing Biff Poggi, the 65-year-old hedge fund millionaire stepping in to lead Michigan football following the Sherrone Moore controversy

Michigan State’s Interim Coach Biff Poggi Steps into Spotlight

In a surprising turn of events, Sherone Moore was let go, prompting Michigan State to appoint Biff Poggi as the interim football coach. If things don’t go well for her at Michigan, she has a potential successor lined up who brings a wealth of experience—and a hefty financial background.

Biff Poggi, 65, transitioned from running a multimillion-dollar hedge fund to coaching at various levels. It’s an unusual path, to say the least.

Starting with a modest $25,000 loan, Poggi founded Samuel James Limited in 1986, which blossomed into a fund valued at hundreds of millions. As reported by Charlotte Magazine, his financial prowess has led to a luxurious lifestyle—complete with a private jet and multiple business ventures.

Leaping into the fiscal debate, Poggi once humorously compared his earnings to those of his former colleague, Jim Harbaugh, boasting, “Of course, me,” when asked who had a better financial year.

Poggi took over coaching duties following Moore’s unanticipated exit. Moore, it seems, found herself in legal trouble due to an alleged inappropriate relationship with a staff member, leading to her arrest by Michigan State Police.

A bit of background on Poggi: he played for Pittsburgh in the early ’80s and wrapped up his studies at Duke in 1984. He later dipped his toes into coaching at institutions like Brown and Temple, before returning to Baltimore to care for his ailing mother, continuing to volunteer teach at the Gilman School.

His career took a significant turn in 1986 when his stepfather nudged him toward finance. After navigating the financial waters for over three decades, he returned to coaching, which, as he puts it, has always been a passion of his.

Back in the world of coaching, Poggi spent 19 years at Gilman School, leading the football team for eight of those, before he joined the University of Michigan as an analyst in 2016.

Poggi’s contributions to Michigan include funding 65 scholarships through personal donations, and he had a major role in establishing the football program at St. Francis Academy in Baltimore.

After spending time reuniting with Harbaugh as the associate head coach, he headed to Charlotte, where he had a challenging two seasons—3-9 and 3-7—before being dismissed in November.

But the journey is not over; he’s back in Ann Arbor to support Moore and has even acted as interim coach during significant wins when she was sidelined. This includes their upcoming match against Texas in the Citrus Bowl, where the odds aren’t in their favor.

Poggi expressed a deep connection to Michigan, likening his return to a heartfelt journey home, saying, “Michigan honestly feels like home to me…I feel like Dorothy from ‘The Wizard of Oz.’ I just want to go home, and Michigan is that for me.”
