Introducing Jack Seidler, UCLA’s version of Jerry Maguire

Jack Seidler’s Aspirations Beyond Basketball

PHILADELPHIA – Jack Seidler has been a fan of the movie “Jerry Maguire” for as long as he can remember. Recently, though, he found a renewed reason to revisit it.

Well, perhaps it’s because of him.

The walk-on guard at UCLA has picked up a nickname from Coach Mick Cronin, inspired by his aspirations to become the next Bruin basketball player who transitions into a sports agent.

If he goes down this path, he would join some well-known alumni like Bob Myers, Toby Bailey, and Todd Lamasar. Notably, Myers rose to become the general manager of the Golden State Warriors and played a role in UCLA’s coaching search that brought in both Cronin and new football coach Bob Chesney.

“The connections within the UCLA athletic department are simply incredible,” Seidler shared in an interview after the Bruins’ recent 75-71 victory over Central Florida in the NCAA Tournament. “I intend to maximize this opportunity.”

Choosing the agent route is quite common for seniors wanting to stay connected to the sport after their playing days come to an end. Seidler has been a favorite among fans throughout his four years, often making appearances only at the tail end of important wins, typically igniting chants of “We want Jack!” from the Pauley Pavilion crowd.

In his two seasons, Seidler has played in 13 games, managing to score once in each of his appearances. He’s left his mark in the rivalry against USC, becoming somewhat of a legend for getting into a tangle with Ezra Orser during a decisive win earlier this month, resulting in both players receiving a flagrant foul.

In a rather atypical display for someone known for his kindness, he leapt onto the court after teammate Skye Clark went for a loose ball, inadvertently chipping a tooth in the process. Seidler jumped in, searching for the lost piece, later joking, “I have 20/20 vision; I ate a carrot!”

As for what lies ahead, Seidler is a bit uncertain. He remains committed to his team, which he hopes still has several weeks left in the season. He acknowledges that becoming certified and affiliated with a sports agency might take some time.

“Right now, we’re focused on putting up a banner and finishing the season strong,” he said. “After that, we’ll see.”
