Knicks Make Strategic Move for French Talent

The Knicks have pulled off another interesting acquisition, this time snagging Melvin Ajinka, a French wing, in a complex four-team trade involving the Mavericks, Suns, and Lakers. As part of this deal, New York sent its No. 24 pick to Los Angeles.

Ajinka, who stands at 6-foot-8, was originally picked 51st overall by the Knicks in 2024 but was traded to the Mavericks on draft night as part of a deal that brought Ariel Hukporti to New York. Now, after spending two years playing overseas, Ajinka, who is about to turn 22, is back in the Knicks’ fold.

He gained some attention during the draft for his shooting prowess, showcasing his potential as a 3-and-D player. Last season with LDLC Asbel in the EuroLeague, he averaged 6.0 points over 17.6 minutes per game.

His first significant exposure to the NBA came at the 2023 FIBA U19 World Cup, where he averaged 19.3 points and helped lead the French team to a gold medal. This signing gives the Knicks the No. 47 pick in this week’s draft, along with several future second-round picks.

By the way, the Lakers chose Cameron Carr, a guard from Baylor, with that 24th pick.

Ajinka adds to a growing roster of young French players on the Knicks, following the 2024 selection of Pacôme Dadier with the 25th pick. Dadier has played in 47 games across two seasons as a developing wing.

Last year, the Knicks also drafted Mohamed Diawara late in the second round. Diawara made quite the impression, participating in 69 games and averaging 3.6 points while shooting 37 percent from the field. Recently, his performance earned him a multi-year contract exceeding $10 million with the team.

Interestingly, the Knicks aimed to manage their draft picks carefully to stay under the salary cap. So, while Ajinka’s place on the team isn’t guaranteed, he’s certainly been on the radar multiple times over the past few years.
