Intruder with engraved knife reading, ‘Hail Satan,’ shot by Texas homeowner: police

A Thrall, Texas, man is accused of breaking into a home with a knife engraved with the words “Hail Satan” and being shot and killed by the homeowner Monday night, police said.

The Taylor Police Department said 23-year-old Austin Sumpter was arrested and charged with breaking and entering of a residence with the intent to commit a felony.

Police were called to the home around 11.30pm on Monday after a homeowner reported a man with a knife was trying to break into their home.

Police said as officers were responding to the home, a man, later identified as Sumpter, entered the home and was shot by the homeowner.

When officers arrived on scene, they found Sumpter lying outside on his front porch with a single gunshot wound to his lower back.

Police also found a large knife and sheath with the words “Hail Satan” inscribed on it in Sumpter’s alleged possession.

Sumpter was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injuries, which are not life-threatening.

Detectives obtained a warrant for Sumpter’s arrest and, upon his release from the hospital Wednesday morning, he was taken into custody and transported to the Williamson County Jail.
