House Oversight Committee Requests Testimonies from Biden Officials
The House Oversight Committee has reached out to four prominent former members of the Biden administration, including ex-press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and former chief of staff, as part of an investigation into President Biden’s cognitive health.
Committee Chairman James Comer, who represents Kentucky, announced on Friday that he sent letters requesting these officials to participate in transcribed interviews. Notably included are Ian Sams, a special assistant to the president, and Andrew Bates, both of whom played significant roles during Biden’s presidency.
Comer stated that this inquiry aims to delve into claims regarding the president’s mental decline, which he claims has been obscured by misleading narratives from Biden’s close circle and allies in the media. He argued that engaging these former officials is crucial to understanding the administration’s actions surrounding the president’s health.
In correspondence to Jean-Pierre, Comer emphasized her close proximity to the president and criticized any downplaying of Biden’s cognitive challenges as mere “cheap lies.” He urged her to appear for a transcribed interview scheduled for August 18.
In his communication with Bates, Comer highlighted Bates’ role as a vocal supporter of Biden’s cognitive fitness, suggesting that Bates’ insights could be pivotal given the allegations against Biden.
Bates has been asked to attend an interview on August 27.
Moreover, Comer’s letter to Jeff Zients addressed perceived chaos within the Biden White House concerning media narratives on the president’s cognitive abilities. He referenced a staff call Zients reportedly held in July 2024, urging the team to rally around Biden after what was described as a poor debate performance. Comer insisted that Zients must also provide insights due to his influential role, with a transcribed interview slated for September 3.
Details from a letter regarding Ian Sams included his description of his position as a crucial defender of the administration against negative headlines surrounding Biden. He is set to appear for questioning on August 11.
Additionally, the committee is expecting testimonies from Biden aides Ashley Williams and Annie Tomasini, underlining the expansive nature of this inquiry.
In a statement, Comer expressed displeasure with Anthony Bernal, a long-time aide to Jill Biden, who withdrew from his intended testimony despite previously agreeing to cooperate. Comer has now mandated Bernal to appear before the committee on July 16 to address these issues.
