Investigation into Cuomo by DOJ brings up concerns about political interference

The Department of Justice is currently investigating New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is a key candidate for the Democratic nomination for New York City mayor.

According to various reports, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C., is looking into Cuomo’s testimony from last year regarding nursing home policies related to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This development follows a decision by the Trump administration to reduce bribery allegations against Mayor Eric Adams, who is also in the running for the nomination.

This raises questions about potential political motivations behind these actions, and perhaps it’s not surprising given the current political landscape.

“There are many reasons people feel discontent with the system right now,” remarked Alix Fraser, vice president at Partisan Group Issue 1, which focuses on democracy and elections in the U.S.

The scrutiny from the DOJ stems from long-standing issues surrounding Cuomo.

Last year, allegations surfaced claiming that he had intentionally underreported nursing home deaths during the pandemic. Cuomo denied these claims, insisting that he was just following federal guidelines. However, New York Attorney General Letitia James found major discrepancies in the reported death toll. A subsequent DOJ Inspector General report found that Cuomo’s policies were comparable to those of other states that also faced investigations.

On the other hand, a Republican-led House Subcommittee claimed that Cuomo had committed fraud and that he misrepresented facts during their inquiry.

The committee recommended that Cuomo be prosecuted for lying about his policies. A separate GOP committee reiterated demands for charges against him.

It’s reported that the investigation was initiated about a month ago by the U.S. Attorney’s Office under Ed Martin’s leadership.

Cuomo’s team quickly labeled the investigation as politically motivated, questioning why such information was leaked at this moment. They insisted he answered all questions honestly and suggested that the timing was politically charged.

The DOJ did not comment on the accusations made by Cuomo, and efforts to get a response from the White House went unanswered.

Analysts find the timing of the investigation suspicious, especially since the DOJ dropped the lawsuit against Adams.

Previously, several prosecutors resigned after allegations of the DOJ’s inappropriate interference in Adams’ reelection campaign. They argued that the indictments were too close to an election.

A representative U.S. attorney reportedly resigned after agreeing to dismiss the case against Adams, raising concerns about potential quid pro quo arrangements.

“It’s troubling that one mayor received a pass simply for supporting the administration’s agenda,” one expert noted.

Other candidates in the mayoral race seem to be navigating the situation by criticizing the DOJ while also acknowledging that Cuomo might thrive with this scrutiny hanging over him.

State Assembly member Zohran Mamdani called attention to Cuomo’s “corruption and deception,” yet pointed out the unreliability of the Trump administration’s actions.

Meanwhile, former state legislator Michael Blake suggested that the probe highlights serious issues with Cuomo’s actions and the possible political weaponization orchestrated by Trump.

With the primary approaching on June 24, some analysts believe this investigation could actually bolster Cuomo’s chances. He seems to be leveraging this situation in his campaign messaging.

Cuomo recently released an ad after the Trump administration’s actions, framing his predicament as part of a broader pattern targeting liberal politicians.

Other candidates are doing what they can, but many believe the motives behind the investigation are fairly apparent.

Boris Hisink, a political science professor, remarked on the questionable legitimacy of election integrity in light of such investigations. He expressed concern about how voters perceive accusations of political misconduct.

“When a politician faces indictment, it often gets labeled as political maneuvering, especially by their supporters,” he explained. This complicates the public’s ability to discern genuine cases of misconduct from politically motivated charges.

“There’s a real paradox here,” Heersink added wistfully. “It creates a culture where everyone seems corrupt, which is disheartening.”
