Investigation Launched into Planned Parenthood by Rep. Greene
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia, has initiated an inquiry into Planned Parenthood, which began on Friday.
In her correspondence with Planned Parenthood CEO Alexis McGill Johnson, Greene raised concerns about potential misuse of federal funding by the nonprofit organization.
Notably, federal funds cannot be allocated for abortions due to a regulation known as the Hyde Amendment. Former President Donald Trump has supported this regulation and has worked to prevent federal funds from going to organizations that provide healthcare to transgender youth.
Greene’s letter suggests that the organization may be mismanaging its resources, particularly regarding abortion services.
She noted that a significant portion—39%—of Planned Parenthood’s annual income comes from federal funding intended for essential health services like cancer screenings and wellness testing. Despite this, Greene believes that the organization is increasingly directing these resources toward abortion services.
According to her, data shows that more than 400,000 abortions have been carried out over the last ten years, as per Planned Parenthood’s most recent reports.
Additionally, Greene criticized what she termed “gender-affirming care,” suggesting it is being offered without sufficient medical or psychological evaluations. Her claims pointed to a particular report by Planned Parenthood that identified 45 affiliated health centers providing hormone therapy for individuals seeking gender-affirming services.
Greene voiced concerns over other transition-related services being reported as “other procedures,” which might obscure the actual number of transgender services being offered.
She pointed out that some health centers provide intersex hormone treatments to minors as young as 16 with parental consent, raising questions about compliance with their own consent policies.
To advance her investigation, Greene is requesting financial statements from Planned Parenthood for the period spanning January 2020 to June 2025. She’s also seeking a list of independent affiliate health centers and informed consent documents.
This inquiry follows the Supreme Court’s decision in June 2022 that reversed Roe v. Wade, passing the responsibility for abortion legislation back to the states.
Republicans have consistently criticized Planned Parenthood, alleging misappropriations of federal funds, while the organization’s supporters argue that it remains a crucial provider of healthcare services for women, especially following the High Court’s rulings.
Greene’s investigation comes shortly after House Republicans endorsed former President Trump’s legislative proposals.
Efforts to contact Planned Parenthood for comments were met without immediate response.
