Recently leaked footage shows Brian Kohberger, the convicted killer from the University of Idaho, appearing to walk around his prison cell with red-stained hands.
This unsettling 10-second clip emerged on social media on Thursday, capturing Kohberger in his prison uniform as he approaches a wire rack in his cell. He takes a moment, seemingly staring at his crimson hands, almost uncomfortably.
Kohberger, 30, has been rumored to have red, irritated hands, possibly from frequent washing throughout the day.
In another short video, the murderer, sentenced to four life terms for the deaths of four University of Idaho students, is seen standing somewhat eerily in the middle of his cell, methodically cleaning his shoes.
The exact timing of the footage remains unclear, but it seems someone recorded the surveillance on their phone from a TV screen in the Kuna Maximum Security Institution in Idaho.
The Idaho Department of Corrections acknowledged the circulating video online, stating, “We are aware of the situation and are investigating it.” They added on Friday that while they cannot yet confirm the authenticity of the videos, if genuine, they would represent a clear violation of department policy, with consequences for the responsible individual. They caution that some footage may be doctored or altered.
Last month, prison officials issued reminders to staff about maintaining professional conduct, emphasizing that sharing security footage is prohibited.
They further noted, “Video recordings and sharing security footage publicly is against regulations, and we will explore all legal avenues, including criminal prosecution.” The safety and security of both staff and inmates continue to be the highest priority.
Kohberger entered a plea deal last month, just weeks before his trial was set to begin. This decision allowed him to avoid the death penalty, which angered some families of the victims and left many questions unanswered regarding his motives.
He was convicted of murdering Xana Kernodle, Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, and Ethan Chapin at his off-campus residence in Moscow on November 13, 2022.
