Sen. Tom Cotton Calls for Investigation into Alleged Iranian Spies
Senator Tom Cotton has reached out to FBI Director Kash Patel and Defense Secretary Pete Hegses, urging them to investigate possible Iranian spies operating within the U.S. intelligence community.
In a letter sent on Wednesday, Cotton emphasized the need for the FBI and the Department of Defense to take this matter seriously, citing concerns about “anti-intellectual issues and potential crimes.” He mentioned reports claiming that “national security information” had been shared with “hostile foreign powers,” suggesting that some American citizens may be working to sway U.S. policies in favor of foreign interests.
Cotton explicitly called out Arian Tabatabai, a prominent figure in the Iranian Expert Initiative (IEI) and a senior policy advisor at the Pentagon under President Biden. Tabatabai, who has Iranian roots, has been accused in the past of being involved in operations linked to Tehran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
There’s a lot of chop surrounding Tabatabai. She was previously an aide to Robert Murray, who faced criticism for allegedly undermining U.S. interests regarding Iran. Since years past, Republicans have pointed fingers at her as a potential spy—an assertion that intelligence officials under the current administration have repeatedly dismissed.
In October, a leak of U.S. documents outlining a planned attack on Iran caused significant challenges for Israeli intelligence, with Tabatabai identified as a potential source of that breach.
In his correspondence, Cotton expressed concern that individuals connected to foreign adversaries have secured influential roles during the Biden administration. He emphasized the potential risk to national security posed by such appointments.
Speaking after sending the letter, the senator reiterated the urgency of addressing perceived vulnerabilities left by the current administration. “I’m quite worried that we’re allowing someone with deep ties to Iran’s security apparatus to operate within our government,” he stated, highlighting Tabatabai’s position at the Pentagon, where her salary reportedly stands at $153,434.
Tabatabai has a notable background, being the daughter of Sayed Javad Tabatabai, a former influential political thinker in Iran. Growing up in Tehran, she was surrounded by political discourse, given her father’s close ties to notable Iranian leaders.
Cotton’s letter also accused previous administration appointees of having unreported communications with Iranian officials, urging immediate action to correct this oversight. He concluded that the FBI and Department of Defense must take responsibility for the situation and ensure that U.S. national interests are safeguarded.
