Investigation Starts into NYC Mayoral Hopeful Andrew Cuomo

The campaign for New York City mayor by former Governor Andrew Cuomo is under fire as Republicans accuse him of misleading Congress regarding his actions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to reports, this scrutiny follows the dismissal of corruption charges against current New York mayor Eric Adams, who seeks reelection.

Adams, who was once a Democrat and is now an independent, has expressed his commitment to supporting President Trump in efforts to address illegal immigration.

An investigation has been initiated by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington concerning Cuomo, which is said to have started about a month ago. Sources close to the matter have provided insights to the New York Times.

It has been noted that:

Congressional Republicans claim that the Justice Department sought to probe Cuomo and allegedly provided false information during a Congressional inquiry regarding COVID-19 fatalities in nursing homes.

Cuomo’s tenure as governor, which lasted a decade, ended in disgrace in 2021 following sexual harassment allegations. Related charges against him were dropped in January 2022.

So far, Cuomo’s campaign has managed to raise approximately $2.5 million, although this figure does not include any super PAC contributions that could amount to much more.

Polling data suggests that Cuomo is leading the race, potentially surpassing Mayor Adams as he attempts to make a political comeback while downplaying prior controversies.

Cuomo’s spokesperson, Rich Azzopardi, stated that the former governor has not been approached by law enforcement concerning any investigation related to COVID-19 deaths, and questioned the timing of the leaks.

“The reasoning is straightforward. This is an intervention in both law and the election process. It’s very clear,” Azzopardi remarked, referencing standpoints from Trump and his Justice Department officials.
