Investigation into Jim Irsay’s Death Underway

Federal officials are looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of Jim Irsay, former owner of the Indianapolis Colts. This includes the role of a doctor who had been prescribing him painkillers and ketamine up until his passing in the spring of 2025.

The FBI issued a subpoena to a federal grand jury in early January for documents related to Irsay’s death, his use of both illegal and prescription drugs, and his connection with addiction specialist Dr. Harry Harutyunian. Information regarding this investigation was gathered from court records and sources acquainted with the matter.

Investigators also reportedly spent several days in Indianapolis in early January as part of the federal inquiry.

“I know a subpoena has been issued, but it doesn’t concern me, the Colts, or any current staff,” said Colts Chief Legal Officer Dan Emerson in a recent interview, choosing not to elaborate further.

Irsay, a prominent figure in the NFL since acquiring the Colts in 1997, passed away at 65 in May. He had been candid about his struggles with substance abuse for many years. Reports indicate that in the two years leading up to his death, he was grappling with relapses while working with Dr. Harutyunian, who had prescribed him ketamine.

Although Irsay’s death certificate cites cardiac arrest as the cause, no autopsy was conducted. Previously reported details reveal that Harutyunian prescribed over 200 opioid pills to Irsay prior to two overdoses in December 2023—one occurring at his home in Indianapolis and the other at a rental property in Miami.

Concerns from those close to Irsay have been mounting regarding his treatment under specialists. Notably, Harutyunian resided at the Beverly Hills Hotel, where Irsay ultimately passed away.
