Ionescu commends Caitlin Clark's influence while Fever star misses All-Star game

WNBA All-Star Weekend Impacted by Caitlin Clark’s Injury

New York Liberty player Sabrina Ionescu expressed concern over Caitlin Clark’s recent injury, which has sidelined the Indiana Fever guard from the upcoming All-Star Weekend. Despite her absence, Ionescu believes Clark’s influence is still being felt at Gainbridge Field House.

Clark sustained an ankle injury during Wednesday’s game against the Freedom, marking her third injury of the season. This setback has ruled her out of the All-Star event, where she was anticipated to shine among the league’s top rookies.

Ionescu spoke to reporters and highlighted the “Clark effect,” noting that her presence, even from the sidelines, significantly impacts the game. “I think it’s really unfortunate we won’t have her on the court. But she brings so much to the game beyond just playing,” she said, pointing out the current excitement surrounding the Fever, with or without Clark.

Reflecting on Clark’s frustrations as she prepares to miss the All-Star Weekend, Ionescu shared her own experiences with injuries. “We’re good friends, and I’ve been able to support her through this. I, too, faced challenges early in my career with injuries,” she added, acknowledging the difficulty of being a spectator during a crucial time.

Liberty’s coach Sandi Brondello emphasized that Clark could still be a vital part of the team even while injured. “She’s still going to have a major influence. I’m thinking of giving her a coaching role for the game. Even though she’s not playing, she continues to be very engaged,” Brondello said.

In light of Clark’s injury, the WNBA has announced that Britney Sykes of the Washington Mystics and Brionna Jones from the Atlanta Dream will step in for her and for the injured Satou Sabally during the All-Star festivities. Additionally, Lexie Hull will take Clark’s place in the three-point contest.
