A 13-year-old Iowa boy died from severe injuries in a sledding accident earlier this month, according to reports.

Adam McWherter died Saturday, 10 days after he rode his sled down a hill on Buffalo Road in Anamosa and into the path of an SUV, KCRG-TV reported, citing the Iowa State Patrol. did.

According to a GoFundMe page set up for the boy's family, school was closed due to a snowstorm on Jan. 10, when Adam and a friend decided to go sledding up his driveway. The page said Adam was “excessively speeding and ran into the road” as the SUV passed.

The 13-year-old boy “instantly lost consciousness” and suffered multiple broken bones and other injuries, the page said. Paramedics rushed Adam to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital in Iowa City.

Adam's 11-year-old friend told officers that he jumped off the sled to warn Adam that there was an oncoming car, but that he didn't notice the car until Adam was already on the street. reported the Cedar Rapids Daily Gazette.

The 49-year-old driver of the SUV told officers he didn't see the boy until just before he slid onto the road, the paper said. The driver said he was unable to stop in time despite rushing to take a break.

No charges have been filed in connection with the incident, but police are continuing to investigate.
