Federal Judge Rules on Iowa’s Education Restrictions
A federal judge announced on Thursday that Iowa can proceed with its restrictions related to teaching gender identity and sexual orientation up to the sixth grade. This decision allows for certain non-ordered educational programs to continue, according to a report.
These limitations specifically affect children in primary schools. US District Judge Stephen Rocher made this call amid ongoing legal debates. He had recently blocked several laws that prevented sexual content from being available in school libraries. The state is now seeking to reverse that ruling.
The Associated Press reported that the Republican majority in Iowa’s legislature aimed to solidify what they believe to be age-appropriate education for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. This effort has faced legal challenges for a considerable time. The contested provisions were temporarily halted just before they could be implemented due to Rocher’s ruling in December 2023. However, in August, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned that decision, allowing the restrictions to be enforced for most grades.
Rocher’s recent ruling was a split decision and has garnered support from various educators and students, as well as an LGBTQ advocacy group that filed a lawsuit regarding these issues.
In February, a significant protest took place at the Iowa State Capitol, where transgender activists showed up as lawmakers debated reducing “gender identity” status as a protected class under state civil rights laws. Video of these demonstrations circulated widely.
Prior to this, a poll from the Parents’ Defense Education indicated a broad opposition to school gender ideology among parents across different political affiliations, as reported by Breitbart News in early January.
In light of these developments, there are reports that former President Donald Trump may sign an executive order to prohibit K-12 schools from educating students on gender ideology and critical race theory (CRT).
As noted by Breitbart, grassroots organizations advocating for parental rights, like Moms for Freedom, have increasingly been battling against gender ideology and CRT since the pandemic.
