State Hygienic Lab Confirms First Case of West Nile Virus in Iowa

Iowa officials have confirmed the state’s first case of the West Nile Virus for this year. According to the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services, the individual affected is a middle-aged adult, specifically between 41 and 60 years old, residing in northern Iowa.

A news release from the department suggests that to effectively guard against the virus, residents should use insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, 2-undecanone, or IR3535. The use of such repellents can significantly reduce the risk of mosquito bites.

The case was confirmed through testing conducted by the State Hygienic Lab.

Iowa’s State Medical Director, Dr. Robert Kruse, emphasized the importance of enjoying the outdoors while also taking precautions against mosquito bites, which can transmit serious illnesses like West Nile Virus. He recommended using bug spray and ensuring that home windows have screens to enhance safety.

Last year, the virus affected 21 individuals in Iowa, with one fatality reported.
