Iowa poll flashes warning sign for Republican congresswoman in competitive district

Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, the Republican incumbent in Iowa's 1st Congressional District, received warning signs after she was trailing slightly behind her Democratic opponent in a poll on Monday.

A new Des Moines Register poll shows Miller-Meeks trailing Democrat Christina Bohannan by 3 points in Iowa's closest race, with Republicans leading the state's other three House races.

Miller-Meeks defeated a challenger in the Republican primary earlier this year, but currently has an approval rating of 46 percent, compared to Bohannan's 49 percent.

The Register poll was conducted Sept. 8-11 among 811 Iowa adults, including 656 registered voters. The poll has a margin of error of 3.8 percentage points.

Miller-Meeks' district has seen its approval rating fluctuate throughout the year, according to Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa polls. A June poll showed Miller-Meeks supporting Bohannon 53% to 41%. Another poll in February had Bohannon leading 49% to 45%.

Meanwhile, the Cook Political Report still rates Miller-Meeks' district as “Republican-leaning,” and Fox News' rankings also had the district as “Republican-leaning” in August.

Miller-Meeks' office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

New polls show Harris surging in Iowa, a state once thought to be safe.

Some Republicans who took part in the Register poll expressed frustration that Miller-Meeks was not sufficiently supportive of former President Donald Trump.

“Our Republicans are so weak and indecisive that they're almost useless, and I would say Meeks falls into that category,” Republican Jim Schenck, 62, told the paper.

“She's just sitting there doing nothing,” he added. “The only thing I can say about her is she's not actively harming us the way Democrats do.”

Schenck said he thinks Miller-Meeks is hesitant to defend Trump because he knows he represents a weak district.
