Iowa temperatures plunge to 50 degrees below freezing as GOP caucusgoers prepare to vote

Temperatures across Iowa dipped below freezing Monday night as Republican voters trudged to caucus halls to cast their first votes in the 2024 presidential primary.

Taking into account the wind chill Monday night, temperatures in the state capital, Des Moines, reached 4 degrees below zero and 23 degrees below zero, according to Fox Weather data. Other cities in Iowa, including Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Sioux City and Iowa City, also experienced freezing temperatures, with Sioux City reaching 26 degrees below zero.

“It's not a 'going out in the daytime' type of story, even though it's so cold and we're talking about things that happened at night,” said David Richards, associate professor of political science. Lynchburg, Virginia told Fox Weather. “It tends to make some people uncomfortable. And if you're a more casual attendee, I think the elements might make you uncomfortable.”

It's unclear how weather will affect Iowa voters' decisions to attend the caucuses, or whether it will have a broader impact on election results.
