Game Highlights: Iowa Defeats Florida in Tense Match
The Gators and their supporters might have some strong feelings about Alvaro Folgueiras, especially after a tense moment in the first half. Folgueiras, playing for the Hawkeyes, got involved in a skirmish that left Alex Condon on the ground during a scramble for the ball.
Surprisingly, Folgueiras wasn’t thrown out of the game. Instead, he went on to score the decisive basket with just 3.9 seconds remaining, securing Iowa’s 73-72 win over the reigning champions.
Gators head coach Todd Golden expressed his frustration post-game, stating he was more upset by the loss than the outcome itself. “I didn’t see the loose ball situation as a double technical; he was the one who initiated contact,” Golden remarked to the media.
Opinions on whether Folgueiras aimed a punch diverge widely. The incident occurred with about 8:35 left in the first half. Condon pulled down Folgueiras, leading to a struggle for possession. While on the floor, Folgueiras seemed to throw his right arm, possibly attempting a punch, though some argue he was just trying to swat the ball away.
Teammates and coaches quickly rushed in to handle the situation, but this did not sit well with either coach. Golden and Iowa State’s coach Ben McCollum exchanged words as tensions escalated.
When Golden was informed of a possible double technical foul, he was visibly upset, captured on video exclaiming, “Are you kidding me? Come on!”
Folgueiras commented later, “It was just a battle for the ball, and people seem to be overreacting. There were no punches thrown; it was just the energy of March Madness.”
Condon, on his part, noted uncertainty about whether he actually got hit during the altercation. Golden mentioned he heard an Iowa player had thrown a punch but jokingly added, “I didn’t connect, so I couldn’t go above a Flagrant 1.”
As for Folgueiras, he contributed significantly to the team’s victory, scoring 14 points and hitting a key three-pointer. This win marked Iowa as the first team to defeat a No. 1 seed in the tournament, advancing them to the Sweet 16.
