Iran Submits Proposal Amid Ongoing Conflict with the U.S.
Iran has put forth a new proposal aimed at ending the two-month long conflict with the United States, but President Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with the offer.
According to the Iranian state news agency, the proposal was conveyed through Pakistani mediators, though specifics about its content remain unclear. Pakistani officials, who have been facilitating communications during the ceasefire, confirmed they forwarded the proposal to U.S. officials.
Trump, who has previously rejected offers from Tehran, indicated plans to maintain restrictions on imports and exports from Iranian ports to pressure the regime to halt its nuclear enrichment efforts, a key objective of Operation Epic Fury.
Sources from Iran revealed to The New York Times that an earlier proposal had included a plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz but would delay discussions on Iran’s nuclear program, while requiring the U.S. to lift its naval blockade. Trump dismissed this offer.
Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, who has remained relatively silent since assuming his position, recently made comments regarding the critical waterway, which sees a substantial portion of global natural gas and oil exports. During a statement marking National Persian Gulf Day, he claimed that the U.S. should be “at the bottom of its waters” and reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to protecting its nuclear capabilities, despite American demands.
While speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump confirmed receiving the proposal but remained unhappy with its terms.
“They want to make a deal. I’m not satisfied with it, so we’ll see what happens,” he remarked.
When pressed about the shortcomings of the proposal, he stated, “They’re asking for things I can’t agree to.”
Over the weekend, Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were set to travel to Pakistan for face-to-face negotiations. However, Trump called off the trip, citing “infighting” within Tehran’s leadership. He suggested that it wouldn’t be prudent to put his team through a long flight without a clear path forward and invited Iran to reach out directly.
Trump also noted that communication has continued via phone, but he described Iran’s leadership as “fractured.”
“It’s a very disjointed leadership,” he said. “They all want to make a deal, but they’re all messed up.”
