Iran Engages in Maritime Conflict in the Strait of Hormuz

On Wednesday, Iran reportedly fired upon three ships in the Strait of Hormuz, managing to seize two of them, according to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The IRGC announced that the vessels captured were identified as the MSC-FRANCESCA—linked to Israel—and another called EPAMINODES. These ships were intercepted while allegedly attempting to leave the area covertly.

Additionally, media sources mentioned that a third vessel, named Euphoria, was targeted while stranded along the Iranian coastline, as reported by the Associated Press.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported two incidents involving gunfire directed at vessels in the strait. They noted that a cargo ship was shot at near the Iranian coast; thankfully, the crew is accounted for, and no significant damage occurred to the vessel.

Earlier on Tuesday, UKMTO also received reports about an IRGC gunboat attacking a container ship off Oman, which sustained considerable damage, but the crew remained safe.

These altercations come on the heels of President Donald Trump’s announcement concerning an extended ceasefire, requested by Pakistani officials, until further discussions can take place.

Trump stated, via Truth Social, that the fractured state of the Iranian government warranted postponing any military action until they could present a unified plan.

But he added that the U.S. naval blockade around Iranian ports would persist.

In another post, he emphasized Iran’s financial reliance on the Strait of Hormuz, mentioning that they depend on its openness to generate significant daily revenue. He argued that despite Iran’s statements about wanting it closed, their aim is to maintain access for economic reasons. Trump expressed that responding to Iran’s overtures for openness might jeopardize any potential agreement.

Meanwhile, the U.S. made headlines over the weekend by seizing an Iranian-flagged ship in the Gulf of Oman. On Tuesday, they also announced boarding a sanctioned vessel in the Indian Ocean.

The Department of War reiterated its commitment to global maritime enforcement to counteract illicit activities and hinder vessels aiding Iran.
