Iran Supreme Leader’s Top Aide

Tehran:

An adviser to Iran’s supreme leader said on Saturday that Israel was panicking over a possible retaliatory response from Iran following an attack in Syria that killed members of the Revolutionary Guards.

“It is only in the past week that the Zionists are in complete panic and alarm,” Yahya Rahim Safavi, a senior adviser to Ayatollah Khamenei, said, according to ISNA news agency.

“They and their supporters are scared because they don’t know what Iran wants to do,” ISNA quoted him as saying.

The Iranian government has accused Israel of seeking revenge for the April 1 airstrike on Damascus that destroyed the Iranian embassy annex and killed seven members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), including two generals. I swore.

Israel has not commented on the attack, but the military announced the suspension of the holiday. Officials also said they had decided to increase personnel and draft reservists for air defense operations.

“For them, this psychological, media and political war is more terrifying than the war itself, because every night they are waiting for an attack and many of them have fled and gone into shelters,” Safavi added. Ta.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based war monitoring group, said 16 people were killed in the April 1 airstrike. Among the dead were General Mohammad Reza Zahedi and General Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, senior commanders of the Quds Force, the external operations arm of the Revolutionary Guards.

Mr Zahedi, 63, became the most senior Iranian military soldier to die since a US missile strike on Baghdad airport in 2020 killed Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani.

The strikes in Damascus come against the backdrop of the Gaza war, which began with Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, which killed 1,170 people, mostly civilians.

The Iranian government supports Hamas but denies any direct involvement in the attack, which has triggered relentless shelling and ground invasions as Israel vows to annihilate Hamas.

At least 33,686 people have been killed in the Hamas-run Palestinian territory during the six-month war, the Palestinian Authority’s health ministry said.

Iran does not recognize Israel, and the two countries have been fighting a shadow war for years.
