Iran and US Prepare for Nuclear Talks in Oman

This Sunday, Iran and the US will embark on their sixth round of negotiations regarding Iran’s advancing nuclear program, as announced by Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al Busaidi. He indicated that regional tensions have escalated recently.

The Omani minister’s announcement comes amid the US downsizing its non-essential staff in the Middle East due to emerging uncertainties in the region.

Additionally, there have been warnings about potential targeting of vessels in areas experiencing tensions.

Al Busaidi made the announcement on Social Platform X, stating, “We are pleased to see that the sixth round of Iranian US talks will be held in Muscat this Sunday on the 15th.”

Iran has mentioned ongoing discussions over recent days, although Oman’s mediation has yet to be confirmed.

No immediate comments have been made by US officials.

Negotiating a deal remains among the various diplomatic priorities that US President Donald Trump and his Middle Eastern envoy, Steve Witkoff, are managing.

Should an agreement be reached, the US may lift some of the severe economic sanctions imposed on Iran in exchange for significantly curbing or completely halting uranium enrichment.

However, failing to secure a deal could lead to heightened tensions in the Middle East, particularly due to the ongoing Israeli-Hamas conflict in the Gaza Strip.

Iran’s economy might plunge further into crisis, which could amplify domestic unrest. There are concerns that Israel or the US might initiate airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

In response, Tehran might choose to enhance cooperation with UN nuclear watchdogs and hasten its pursuit of nuclear capabilities.

Previously, Iran and the US have held discussions in Muscat and Rome.
