Clashes Erupt in Tehran Amid Student Protests
On Saturday, in Tehran, protests turned violent as Iranian security forces confronted student demonstrators, resulting in injuries among some participants. The Iranian government has denied claims that it has killed over 30,000 of its citizens.
Students from universities including Sharif University of Technology, Amirkavit University of Technology, and Tehran’s Besheti University took to the streets, shouting phrases like “Death to Khamenei.”
At Sharif University, students faced assaults from the Basij militia, as reported by local news sources. The clashes reportedly left several students injured, while large crowds insulted the militia, calling them “shameless.”
The specifics of the injuries have not been disclosed.
In Mashhad, protests also emerged, with students from Mashhad Medical University gathering to chant “freedom” emphatically.
In late December, tensions escalated, with nationwide demonstrations sparked by economic issues, which subsequently led to widespread violence and calls for governmental change.
President Trump has accused the Iranian regime of being responsible for approximately 32,000 deaths during these protests. However, the Iranian government countered this assertion, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stating that only 3,117 Iranians had been killed, attributing their deaths to U.S. influence and labeling them “victims of recent terrorist operations.” He challenged anyone doubting their figures to provide evidence.
Human rights activists linked to the UN claim to have recorded over 7,000 deaths amid the protests and are probing additional incidents.
The stark difference in reported casualties coincides with rising regional tensions.
President Trump has issued a warning to Tehran, indicating that the U.S. and Israel may conduct airstrikes if an agreement on nuclear issues isn’t reached within ten days.
As this unfolds, the United States is fortifying its military posture in the area, with reports that the USS Gerald R. Ford has recently entered the Mediterranean Sea, accompanied by other ships including the USS Abraham Lincoln stationed nearby in the Arabian Sea.
