Iran’s Foreign Minister Set to Meet S Jaishankar Amid Rising India-Pakistan Tensions

Iran’s Foreign Minister Visits New Delhi

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araguchi, arrived in New Delhi tonight for his introductory visit. He is set to meet with his counterpart, S. Jaishankar, to co-chair the 20th Joint Committee meeting between India and Iran. This year’s meeting is particularly significant, marking the 75th anniversary of the Indian-Iranian Friendship Treaty. During bilateral discussions, both nations aim to examine the entire spectrum of their relationship, search for new avenues, and fortify existing ties.

Typically, the joint committee convenes annually, but recent meetings were delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and other domestic issues in both countries. The Iranian Embassy in New Delhi mentioned that the latest updates on the implementation of economic agreements between the two nations would be discussed during the committee’s sessions.

Following the bilateral talks, Araguchi is scheduled to meet with President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

This visit comes at a tense time, as recent terrorist activities linked to Pakistan have sparked concerns. Following attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, India has responded by targeting terrorist camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Iran has condemned these religiously motivated attacks, with Araguchi stating, “Iran strongly and explicitly condemns the terrorist attacks on tourists in Pahargam. Our thoughts and prayers are with the innocent victims and their families.”

Moreover, Iran expressed worry over the heightened military tensions between India and Pakistan, urging both nations to practice restraint. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghai stated that Tehran values its long-standing relations with both New Delhi and Islamabad, and is closely monitoring the current situation.

He expressed hope that both countries would take proactive measures to de-escalate tensions. Earlier in the week, Araguchi also visited Pakistan, where he led a political delegation and held talks with Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar.
