Iran's Leaders Should Approach Trump with Caution

Rep. Greg Stanton Discusses Iranian Leaders’ Skepticism Towards Trump

During a recent segment on CNN International’s “Brief,” Rep. Greg Stanton (D-AZ) expressed that Iranian leaders have a notable distrust in President Donald Trump’s credibility. He mentioned that Iran was not expecting a covert attack, suggesting that all the ongoing negotiations have been shrouded in ambiguity since their withdrawal from the nuclear agreement.

Stanton remarked that, if the current ceasefire proves genuine, it would be positive news. He noted that the president seems more focused on engaging with the American public rather than continuing diplomatic relations with Iran. Stanton criticized Trump’s abrupt change in strategy, saying that all the discussions seem aimed at preventing Iran from anticipating a surprise assault from the White House, which he finds particularly frustrating.

In response to host Jim Seit’s question about the reliability of the U.S. diplomatic efforts, Stanton reflected on the earlier agreements made under President Obama, including the Iran nuclear deal, from which Trump later withdrew. He acknowledged that Iran has every reason to be skeptical of Trump’s credibility and implied that the U.S. is heading in a distinctly different direction from previous administrations.
