Iran’s nuclear program reaches a critical point during US diplomatic attempts

Critical Moment with Iran: Rubio’s Warning

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has highlighted a pivotal time for the United States regarding Iran, emphasizing the need to limit the Islamic Republic’s nuclear ambitions. During a Thursday interview on “Hannity,” he noted that NATO allies are united in aiming to reach a defense spending target of 5% of GDP by the 2025 summit, a response to increasing global threats.

Since Donald Trump entered office, there have been four rounds of discussions between U.S. and Iranian officials, mostly held in Oman. The context of these talks revolves around Tehran’s nuclear activities.

The International Atomic Energy Agency, often referred to as the UN’s nuclear watchdog, reported in March a notable increase in Iran’s stockpile of uranium enriched to 60%, escalating from 182 kg to 275 kg. This represents a significant amount, roughly translating to about 606 pounds by early 2025.

Rubio stated, “When you reach 60%, you’re 90% of the way there. Essentially, Iran is on the verge of becoming a nuclear weapons state.” He expressed concern that if Iran chooses to, it could rapidly advance its enrichment to a level suitable for weapons.

Trump, while speaking to reporters in Qatar, mentioned that the U.S. is nearing an agreement with Iran, claiming that Iran is adhering to specific terms. He also asserted that Middle Eastern nations should not possess nuclear weapons.

Conversely, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi maintained that the country will not relinquish its rights to civilian nuclear energy or dismantle its enrichment facilities.

In February, the White House announced its strategy of “maximum pressure” against Iran, aiming to restrict its nuclear program and ballistic missile efforts while addressing support for proxies in the region that threaten American interests.

Rubio conveyed that Trump wishes for Iran to be a peaceful and thriving nation, pointing out that ultimately, the decision lies with Iran’s supreme leader. “I hope he chooses a peaceful and prosperous path instead of one leading to destruction,” he added.
