Family of Iryna Zarutska Seeks Justice Following Tragic Death
The family of Iryna Zarutska has released a public statement for the first time since she was violently killed on a North Carolina light rail train. They are calling for justice and advocating for improvements in public safety measures.
In a message conveyed through their attorney, the family characterized Iryna as “a kind and hardworking young woman who is deeply loved by her family and friends.” They expressed their hope that the man charged with her murder will face significant consequences, as her sudden loss has left them heartbroken.
“We are devastated beyond words. Iryna came to this country seeking peace and safety, yet her life was taken from her in the most tragic way,” the statement shared. “Families shouldn’t have to endure this kind of pain.”
Furthermore, the family emphasized the need for accountability regarding Iryna’s murder and pointed to the broader issues of public safety that need urgent attention. They remarked, “This incident could have involved any person on the light rail that night… We are committed to ensuring that this doesn’t happen again.”
Iryna, a Ukrainian refugee, had been on her way home from her job at a pizzeria when the attack occurred. DeCarlos Brown Jr., the accused, has a documented history of mental illness and multiple arrests, and he allegedly fatally stabbed her in a random assault.
This shocking act of violence has sparked national outrage and criticism towards the city’s policies, which some believe are too lenient on crime. Records show that Brown has faced 14 arrests over the past 12 years and was charged with first-degree murder shortly after the incident.
The Zarutska family continues to stress the importance of transportation security, calling for a thorough investigation into the safety measures of the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS). They noted that her murder highlights issues such as the inadequate security on the blue line and lapses in oversight on contracts with private security providers.
Moreover, they urged city officials to openly address these security failures and make necessary reforms. They aim to rally together with supporters and allies to demand long-term change and justice.
Having fled the violence in her home country in search of a new life, Iryna had been working hard at the pizzeria and was studying English at a community college in Charlotte. Tragically, on the night of her murder, she had texted her boyfriend to let him know she would be home soon.
When she didn’t arrive at her apartment at the expected time, her loved ones grew concerned. Tracking her phone led them to the station, where they were heartbroken to discover that Iryna had already lost her life.
The family also appealed to the public and the media, requesting respect for Iryna’s memory and their grief, and asked that footage of the tragic incident not be circulated.
