Is a Second Season of 'Chief of War' Coming?

The star of War Chief, even without an official announcement from Apple TV+, seems to hint at the potential for another intense season filled with conflict.

“I love playing this character so much,” said Lucian Buchanan, who plays Queen Consort Kahumanu.

This historical drama, which premiered in August 2025, takes imaginative liberties with the events surrounding the unification of the Hawaiian islands in the late 1700s, in light of impending colonization. Jason Momoa co-created the show alongside Thomas Paua Civette and takes on the role of Cariana, the island’s first leader.

“It feels like all of this has chosen me. This is my destiny,” Momoa shared.

So, will there be a second season of War Chief? Here’s what we know from Momoa and the cast.

Is there a season 2 of War Chief?

As of now, Apple TV+ hasn’t officially confirmed anything. Yet, the producer mentioned that they were hoping to have news by September, not only about a second season but maybe even a third.

“We’re not driving the funding for this, so there are definitely hurdles to overcome, but it’s a collaborative process,” Momoa explained.

From limited series to multi-season plans:

Interestingly, Momoa indicated that War Chief was initially pitched as a limited series. However, just before filming commenced, he and Civette decided to explore the possibility of future seasons, which includes the pivotal death of Kaiana’s brother Nahi.

“We thought, ‘Man, there’s more to say. We have to expand this story,'” Momoa stated. “But once we altered the format, we knew Nahi’s death had to happen.”

Momoa also acknowledged that the choices made diverged from strict historical accuracy.

“Nahi didn’t die like this, but I understood the story’s needs. I hope this creates the emotional impact we need to propel us into the finale and set the stage for season 2,” he mentioned.

Who’s returning for Season 2?

If War Chief goes ahead, fans can expect the returning cast to include both Momoa and Buchanan. Interestingly, Buchanan believes there are still plenty of untold stories waiting to be explored.

“There’s so much more to delve into,” she said. “Anyone who watched the show knows there are numerous battles, betrayals, and events to unfold as Kamehameha unites these kingdoms.”

What did Jason Momoa say about Season 2?

Momoa, a veteran of shows like Game of Thrones, remains optimistic about the series’ future and has a sense that it resonates with fans.

“The show has received great feedback from both critics and the audience,” he told reporters. “I seldom hear anything negative about it.”

He further noted that the overwhelming response from the Hawaiian audience, along with Apple’s backing, boosts the chances for renewal.

“If people truly connect with it, there’s immense potential in what can happen next,” he remarked. “If there’s a next season, oh boy, that’s massive because the story is just that grand.”
