Apple’s new Journal feature aims to record life’s small moments directly on your iPhone. But posts on social media started exploding, allowing anyone to know your full name and location and read your deepest thoughts. Wow.

Is fear-mongering worth worrying about? Or is it just a technological urban legend? I got the scoop on Apple Journal, and in the process discovered an even more concerning privacy issue that I’m sure you missed. But first…
I’m a technology expert. We need to make technical changes now, before it’s too late.
What is the relationship with Apple Journal?
Think of it like a digital diary on your phone that tracks videos, photos, audio clips, and location data. It then sends you notifications at eerily timed moments to remind you to write something down.
Let’s say you’re out on the town at night with your friends and take photos at a restaurant. Apple Journal will remember it and send you a prompt to write an entry about it.

Apple says the feature won’t share this information with outside parties, but that still left many people thinking, “Hmm, maybe not.” I don’t need Tim Cook to know about my fifth-grade crush, thank you.
Hair is raised in two settings
Journaling suggestions and discoveries by others are causing a stir. Social media posts have spread like wildfire claiming that these settings allow strangers to access your personal information and entries.
First, let’s tackle the journaling suggestion. If you look into it, journaling suggestions are only made based on the app you’re using. Additionally, you will be able to control what data is included.

Okay, but can Apple see your entries?
🔍 Myth busted: No, your entries are encrypted end-to-end. That means even Apple can’t access it.
The “Discoverable” setting detects nearby iPhone users who have the Journal app and are “discoverable.” So do you share your information with passersby?

🔍 I also debunked this. This setting won’t share your name or location with strangers. It only lets you know how many contacts are around you to create more personalized prompts.
You can easily disable it in settings.
- On your iPhone or iPad,[設定]Open.
- [プライバシーとセキュリティ]>[ジャーナリングの提案]Tap.
- Toggle “Discoverable by Others” to the off position.
- You can also turn off journaling suggestions completely or customize the type of data used to create prompts.

Is there one privacy concern you should be afraid of?
Everyone can see your smartphone name. Yes, anyone trying to connect to your Wi-Fi will appear as a potential hotspot in the list of discovered networks. This means that if you use your real name as your phone name, anyone with a smartphone or laptop can see it.
Hackers can use that information to focus on who you are (and where you are). No, that’s creepy. The good news is that you can easily change your phone’s name to something else.

- iPhone/iPad:[設定]>[一般]>[バージョン情報]>[名前]Open.[X]Tap and enter a new name. Press “Done”.
- Android:[設定]>[電話情報]>[デバイス名]Go to. Enter a new name for your phone, then[OK]Click.
