House Speaker Mike Johnson is scrambling to put together a new funding bill after prominent Republicans, including President-elect Donald Trump and MAGA allies, blocked Johnson's first continuing resolution. Funding deadlines are approaching, and a government shutdown is becoming more likely.
Mr Johnson announced the original CR on Tuesday night, after several delays in negotiations. The reception of this funding bill was poor, to say the least.
As pressure mounts and the December 20 deadline approaches, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is looking to go back to the drawing board.
Within 24 hours, dozens of lawmakers and Trump supporters launched a pressure campaign targeting CR. Many expressed concerns about the price, calling the 1,547-page bill “.criminal” and “lots of pork. ”
In a statement Wednesday night, President Trump dealt the final blow to an already languishing funding bill, calling the bill “destructive” and calling for a clean CR in its place.
“It sounds like the ridiculous and extremely expensive Continuing Resolution PLUS is rapidly disappearing, but who can imagine passing the debt ceiling guillotine scheduled for June without ending or extending it? “Would you like?” Trump said In a post on Truth Social on Wednesday. “Unless Democrats end or substantially extend the debt ceiling now, I will fight to the end. This is a nasty trap set by the radical left Democrats!”

Trump has increased the risk of an already high-handed spending fight by demanding that leaders also address the debt ceiling in negotiations. President Trump doubled down on his last-minute order by calling for a primary if Republicans did not comply.
“If Republicans are willing to pass a clean continuance resolution without all of the Democratic 'bells and whistles' that are so destructive to our country, all they can do after January 20th is force the Trump administration to limit the debt. “Instead of allowing that to happen in the Biden administration,” Trump said. added. “Republicans stupid enough to do this should and will be elected to primary office.”
President Trump: “Raising the debt ceiling is not a good thing, but I would rather do it under Biden's watch.'' said He said this in a joint statement Wednesday with Vice President-elect J.D. Vance. “If Democrats won't cooperate on the debt ceiling now, who in the world is going to think they'll do so in June when we're in office? Let's start the discussion now. And let's get Chuck Schumer and a streamlined plan that doesn't burden the government. We should pass a spending bill.'' Democrats get everything they want. ”
As pressure mounts and the December 20 deadline approaches, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is back to square one.
Late Wednesday night, Republican Reps. Chip Roy (Texas), Jim Jordan (Ohio), Rules Committee Chairman Burgess Owens and Mr. Vance were in attendance. spotted Mr. Johnson enters and exits the chairman's office as he searches for his future direction.

Later Florida Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna Confirmed He said on Wednesday that there would be no more votes, a likely sign that Mr Johnson's pressure campaign against the CR had led him to abolish it altogether. Luna confirmed additional reports that Johnson and other members of the Republican conference are “refining the bill” and are “likely to implement” a clean CR.
That being said, the clock is ticking. As time passes, a government shutdown becomes more and more likely.
The threat of a government shutdown days before Christmas has historically motivated lawmakers to pass a Christmas omnibus bill like the one Johnson originally proposed on Tuesday. especially johnson said “We have no intention of going back to that terrible tradition,” he said in September.
A government shutdown may be on the table at this point, with several members of Congress and Trump allies calling for it.
“The Unionist Party and the mainstream media want you to fear a government 'shutdown,'” said Republican Congressman Andy Biggs. said “Here's the truth: 85% of the government is business as usual. Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid are all paid in full. Perhaps a moratorium on unnecessary spending would be beneficial.”
“When the government says 'shutdown,' it doesn't actually shut down because all essential workers continue to work,” Musk said. said “So…shut down,” X's Wednesday post said.
There are no CR votes scheduled and no new text released at this time. With lawmakers facing the possibility of a government shutdown, we'll have to wait and see what the Hill comes up with in the 11th hour.
