Accountability in Judicial Appointments

President Trump is right to hold Attorney General Pam Bondy accountable for her work, but accountability should extend to him as well. One of his judicial nominees raises questions in this regard.

Rebecca Tableson, who’s been nominated for the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, previously donated to Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign and Kamala Harris’ 2015 Senate campaign. At just 42, if she is confirmed, she could influence conservative precedents for quite some time. So why this choice?

This nomination happened before Charlie Kirk’s tragic assassination, and in its aftermath, things seem to be getting murkier, especially with rising tensions related to transgender issues. I find it unsettling that Tableson has supported organizations that promote transgender ideologies and even married someone known for similar beliefs.

When incidents of violence inspired by these ideologies result in bloodshed, why would we advance someone who plays into that cultural narrative?

The issue goes beyond just one nomination. Tableson’s background reflects a broader crisis in culture—one that seems to reject core values and pass on a message devoid of spirituality. As Charlie Kirk suggested, we should focus on building families and upholding values that transcend generations. What we see from Tableson, however, appears to be a worldview that celebrates destructive ideologies.

It’s crucial for conservatives to be honest with ourselves. I sometimes think we can compromise on fundamental truths to win through legal or medical arguments. But the fallout from Covid and the ongoing transgender debate illustrate what happens when “experts” detach from moral foundations, essentially justifying the infringement on life and freedom for the sake of feelings.

My empathy for Charlie’s family doesn’t allow me to soften this message. Years of squishy compromises have only led to deeper challenges. The slippery slope of concession often ends with significant consequences.

It’s hard to believe that someone like Tableson could be seen as a solution amidst America’s turmoil after Kirk’s assassination. Institutions like colleges, media outlets, and parts of the legal system often dismiss spiritual accountability, failing to solve the problems they exacerbate.

CS Lewis noted that when one finds themselves off course, the responsible action is to retreat and recalibrate. Tableson, however, seems far from the right path, perhaps even contributing to a misguided direction.

Ultimately, we shouldn’t be rewarding those who disregard the truth. If we continue to ignore pressing issues, our chances of meaningful change diminish.
