Max Verstappen Contemplates Retirement Amid F1 Season

The 2026 Formula 1 season has barely kicked off, but one of its standout drivers is already pondering his future.

It’s not just the current season on his mind; it’s his entire career.

Max Verstappen, a four-time world champion, hinted at the possibility of retiring as the drivers’ champion by the end of the 2026 season during last weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix. His remarks came during a time when F1 is seeing significant technical changes, notably introducing a nearly equal blend of battery power and internal combustion engines in the vehicles.

This shift has altered driving dynamics, focusing more on energy recovery to recharge battery power. As this plays out across various sections of different tracks—like the high-speed corners in Japan—Verstappen has expressed he’s struggling not just with rankings but with enjoying the sport itself.

“That’s what I’m indicating. I’m thinking about everything in this paddock,” Verstappen noted after the race. When asked about the prospect of leaving F1, he elaborated:

“Personally, I’m quite happy. You all anticipate 24 races; this time it’s 22. But usually, it’s 24. I find myself pondering whether it’s worth it. Or maybe it would be more enjoyable to stay home with family? To spend time with friends when I’m not competing?”

“It’s easy to accept being seventh or eighth in my current position,” he continued. “Because I know that each time, I’m striving for the podium. It’s tough not to dominate or finish in the top spots. I’m realistic about it, and I’ve had podium finishes before. But I’m not winning all the time in F1.”

“Still, when you’re consistently finishing in the seventh or eighth positions and not truly enjoying the sport, that feels wrong for a racing driver,” Verstappen said. “I do my best to adapt, but the racing style isn’t fitting. At some point, it’s like—not really what I want to be doing.”

These statements have stirred discussions in the paddock regarding Verstappen’s future. Many observers note that while he has a contract with Red Bull through 2028, there’s a performance clause that could alter his path. A notable insider in the paddock remarked that the upcoming downtime before the Miami Grand Prix in early May could be “extremely important” for Verstappen and Red Bull’s future.

Is it possible that the four-time champion might genuinely step away from racing?

If you think that’s unlikely, you may want to reconsider what he’s been expressing over the years.

For some time, Verstappen has clearly stated he doesn’t envision driving into his 30s, much less his 40s, like current competitors Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton. In a recent interview, he made it clear that despite his impressive performance in 2023, he acknowledges his time in F1 is gradually closing.

When asked about the possibility of racing at an older age like Hamilton and Alonso, Verstappen firmly replied, “No, absolutely not. I have no interest.”

“I’ve already mapped out what I want to pursue beyond F1,” he mentioned. “It’s a huge passion of mine, and I want to make that happen… I’ve been racing since I was four years old, and there comes a point when enough is enough. It’s not about chasing titles for me. After winning, it all ends up feeling the same.”

“I have many plans outside of F1. My life isn’t solely about racing. At some point, I think I can transition to other things without the constant travel, since that can get exhausting.”

That said, this was his mindset in 2023, a year where he was dominating and seemed to enjoy the competition.

Yet then, the looming new regulations emerged, and Red Bull drivers raised concerns last season regarding their potential impact and future.

“I’m contracted until 2028, but [his future] really hinges on the new rules for 2026 and whether they are exciting and enjoyable,” Verstappen stated last November at the Qatar Grand Prix.

“Winning seven titles hasn’t crossed my mind. I recognize I have three years left on my contract after this season, so it’s feasible, but it’s not essential for me to accomplish that before leaving the sport.”

“I could easily walk away from racing tomorrow.”

There might indeed be a motivational element to Verstappen’s recent remarks. He’s not alone in expressing concerns about the new regulations, but as a prominent four-time champion, his insights are especially notable. As pointed out, the sport is taking driver feedback seriously regarding the new rules, especially with concerns about how energy recovery has altered in-car experiences. The serious incidents during races, such as Oliver Bearman’s “horrifying” crash at the Japanese Grand Prix, have also drawn attention.

However, his comments aren’t new. Verstappen has hinted at leaving F1 for many seasons now, even during his dominant 2023 campaign where he won nearly every race and only missed the podium once. Despite the enjoyment he felt on the track, his thoughts have been drifting toward retirement.

His recent remarks certainly suggest the end may be closer than many anticipated.
