Is this the lowest-scoring Super Bowl on record?

(NEXSTAR) — Those paying attention to the Super Bowl late may be a little surprised when they see the score.

After a back-and-forth first quarter, the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers entered the second quarter tied 0-0. It took until the start of the second quarter for a point to be scored. Jake Moody then made a 55-yard field goal and the 49ers took a 3-0 lead.

The Chiefs looked poised to take the lead until then. Isaiah Pacheco’s fumble in the red zone.

The 49ers scored a touchdown on a trick play, a pass from receiver Jauan Jennings to running back Christian McCaffrey, extending their lead to 10-0.

Harrison Butker made a 28-yard field goal with 20 seconds left in the half, giving the Chiefs the lead.

The game was 10-3 at halftime, and if no one scored in the second half, it would have ranked as the lowest-scoring Super Bowl in history.

But about midway through the third quarter, Butker made a 57-yard field goal to make the score 10-6. And after recovering a punt fumble late in the quarter, the Chiefs were able to score again on a touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes to Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

With the extra point, the Chiefs jumped out to a 13-10 lead with less than three minutes left in the third quarter. This moved the game away from the lowest scoring in Super Bowl history.

16 points is the lowest final score ever seen in a Super Bowl game. That happened just a few years ago in Super Bowl LIII, when the New England Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Rams. 13-3. Before that game, fans had scored just 21 points in Super Bowl VII in 1973, when the Miami Dolphins defeated Washington, 14-7.

So, technically, if the game ended now, this could be the lowest-scoring Super Bowl of all time. But as fans of both teams know, there are still opportunities for both offenses to score more points in the second half.

Chiefs fans are well aware of the team’s upcoming season. Recovering from a 24-14 deficit In last year’s Super Bowl, they won 38-35 at halftime.
