Isaiah Likely Shines in Giants’ Win Over Cowboys
Isaiah Likely made an immediate impact in New York, and it’s clear now just why he followed coach John Harbaugh. In the Giants’ Week 1 victory against the Cowboys, which ended 28-20, Likely emerged as quarterback Jaxson Dart’s go-to target, aside from Malik Nabers, creating difficulties for a Dallas secondary that struggled throughout the game.
After signing a three-year contract worth $40 million with the Giants, Likely was expected to play a significant role on a team that showed questionable depth in the receiving corps beyond Nabers. But if Sunday’s performance is any indication, Likely could easily become a key part of their offense. He made all eight receptions thrown his way, scored twice, and racked up 78 yards. It was a noteworthy start for the Giants under Harbaugh, setting the tone for what could be a promising season.
Theo Johnson and Chris Manhertz managed most of the blocking assignments, while the Giants frequently utilized two-back and two-tight end formations. This setup allowed Likely, who possesses the build and skills of a receiver, to take on that role effectively.
One highlight was a well-executed out route where Dart delivered what many consider his top throw of the night—perfectly placed for a 19-yard gain during a drive that, unfortunately, ended in a fumble by Tyrone Tracy Jr.
He also found the end zone, running free to snag a touchdown just before halftime, capping off a smooth 55-yard drive that involved just six plays. After the break, Dart targeted him again with success during a lengthy drive, which saw Likely add another touchdown to his night, giving the Giants a 21-7 advantage.
When the Cowboys started to close in, the Giants needed to maintain possession in the fourth quarter. Dart relied on Likely again on two crucial third downs, one on a third-and-9 and then again on a third-and-3. It was a telling moment, showing that Likely had quickly become a reliable option.
Reflecting on his previous season in Baltimore, where he caught 27 passes, it’s hard not to think that Likely is set to surpass that number by a significant margin after just one game with the Giants.
He only managed one touchdown last year, but now he’s already added two. Currently, it seems like he is developing into a safety net for Dart, who played with both authority and assurance during the game. That’s certainly a beneficial role to have.
