Brawl Erupts During Pistons vs. Hornets Game
Monday night’s altercation between the Detroit Pistons and Charlotte Hornets is likely to bring about some discipline from the NBA. Notably, one player is set to face a lengthy suspension.
Pistons center Isaiah Stewart has been handed a seven-game suspension for his role in the fracas, notably running off the bench to confront Hornets forward Miles Bridges.
Bridges, along with Hornets teammate Moussa Diabaté, received four-game suspensions, while Pistons center Jalen Duren got a two-game suspension due to initiating the conflict.
The NBA justified Stewart’s longer suspension by stating he “left the bench area and aggressively entered into an altercation and fight on the court.” They also highlighted Stewart’s “history of unsportsmanlike conduct” as a factor.
The chaotic scene unfolded during a wild third quarter at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, with all four involved players ejected. What started as a routine play led to a significant conflict when Duren backed Diabaté in the paint, which resulted in an accidental face collision and escalating tension.
Surprisingly, Duren poked Diabaté, and even after efforts from both teams to calm things down, Diabaté remained intent on confronting Duren further.
Pistons veteran Tobias Harris tried to restrain Diabaté, but the situation escalated quickly. Diabaté swung at Duren, prompting a back-and-forth between the two players. As tensions peaked, Stewart jumped off the bench and entered the melee, throwing punches and intensifying the chaos.
While efforts were made to regain order, the ejections continued. In the fourth quarter, Hornets coach Charles Lee was thrown out for arguing a no-call after his player collided with Pistons’ Paul Reed.
Despite the brawl, the Pistons secured a 110-104 victory, which marked an impressive 39-13 record, leading the Eastern Conference. The Hornets, meanwhile, are struggling at 25 wins and 29 losses, sitting in 10th place in the conference.
