An ISIS terror plot at a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna, Austria, was thwarted on Wednesday after authorities arrested two men suspected of plotting a terror attack at a large event including the pop star’s planned concert in the European city.
Police said Swift’s upcoming shows at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium on Thursday, Friday and Saturday were scheduled to go ahead as scheduled and that “the concrete risk has been reduced to minimal.” report NBC News.
Authorities said the two suspects had been radicalised via the internet and had developed specific, detailed plans on how to carry out a terror attack.
Vienna state police chief Franz Ruff and police chief Gerhard Purstl added that one of the men arrested by the Austrian federal and state police was a 19-year-old who had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
Bomb disposal squads reportedly found chemicals after the 19-year-old suspect was detained. It is unclear whether the chemicals were used to make a bomb, but investigations into the nature of the substances are ongoing.
According to NBC News, Austria’s Cobra unit, which is similar to the FBI’s hostage rescue teams, assisted in the arrest of the two suspects.
Police added that there would be increased security at Swift’s concert, including heavy weapons units, police dogs, explosive ordnance disposal units and tactical vehicles, while fans have been warned to expect delays as authorities carry out thorough screening of visitors and vehicles.
If a terror attack were to occur at a Swift concert, it would likely be eerily reminiscent of the May 2017 suicide bombing by an Islamic extremist at Manchester Arena in Manchester, England, which killed 22 people after a performance by pop star Ariana Grande.
