A radical British Islamic cleric has reportedly called on his followers to raise funds to buy a Scottish island in order to establish a de facto Islamic state within the UK.
be report from Sunday MailKuwaiti Shiite cleric Sheikh Yasser al-Habib is seeking to raise £3.5 million to buy a private island, Torsa (Thor), in Scotland’s Inner Harbour region, as a relocation destination for Shiites from around the world.
Al-Habib reportedly said the purchase was to help establish a “homeland” for the Union of the Mahdi Apostles, a Shiite Muslim sect that believes that a Mahdi will appear as a messiah at the end of the world, save Islam and establish peace and justice on earth.
The cleric reportedly told his followers on Buckinghamshire-based satellite station Fadak TV: “If you want to live freely under the flag of the Imam, if you want to live in a place that reminds us of the Mahdi we all long for, in a special homeland, a homeland for all Shiites, then support this project.”

The so-called “Fulmar mullahs” are already said to be running “boot camps” for their followers, who parade through the British countryside in military-style uniforms.
Sarah Zaimi, a spokeswoman for the Atlantic Council, said that if the group were to buy the islands, “they would have their own military, their own judicial system, they would run their own schools and hospitals, and people from all over the world would be able to move to this homeland.”
“This calls into question the concept of sovereignty. I cannot understand why the British authorities are allowing these discussions to take place – they are raising funds to create a sovereign state in the corner of another country,” she added.
One resident told the ministry: “I don’t know if the Women’s Association would tolerate this. We welcome everyone but we don’t think this is appropriate.”
