Marshall Warren’s NHL Debut
PHILADELPHIA — Marshall Warren had a taste of the NHL dream, yet it was a bit bittersweet for him as the Islanders faced a 4-3 shootout defeat against the Flyers.
Warren ended the night with two assists, an achievement he probably hadn’t imagined when he was younger, cheering on the Islanders from his hometown of Laurel Hollow. “You dream of it,” he reflected. “How many nights have I dreamed of it? It’s incredible when it finally happens. Sure, I’d wanted to win, but hearing everyone’s thoughts was uplifting.”
Originally drafted by the Minnesota Wild in the sixth round of 2019, Warren’s rights lapsed, leading the Islanders to sign him as a college free agent in April 2024.
Though he wasn’t initially seen as a front-runner, Warren made a name for himself during a solid training camp and preseason. With Alexander Romanov on injured reserve, Warren was brought up ahead of Isiah George, who had played 33 games for the team last season. Then, when Adam Boqvist was scratched for Saturday’s game, the Long Island native got his chance to make his NHL debut.
“It’s a memory I’ll never forget,” he said. “It’s really emotional.”
Most of his family managed to drive to Philadelphia to support him, though his dad had to remain at home due to Warren’s grandfather being hospitalized.
In those 11 minutes and 20 seconds of ice time, Warren contributed significantly. His second assist came from Max Tsyplakov’s tip-in shot that momentarily put the Isles ahead 3-2 in the third period.
Whether he continues in the lineup can hinge on Romanov’s recovery. The Russian player could return from IR anytime, but it’s uncertain when he’ll be fit again following his upper-body injury.
There’s a sense that Warren could emerge as a valuable asset for the Islanders. “I thought he played really well,” said coach Patrick Roy. “Two assists. He had a solid game. I was quite pleased for him.”
In a twist, during the overtime period, the Islanders began with Matthew Schaefer, Bo Horvat, and Matt Barzal all on the ice together.
Additionally, Scott Mayfield marked his season debut, engaging in a fight with Garnet Hathaway and also racking up additional penalties in a game that was physical for both players.
