Lou Lamoriello has re-hired several former Devils staff members to fill out the Islanders coaching staff.
The Islanders named Tommy Alverin as an assistant coach on Monday, returning him to the NHL bench for the first time in 10 years.
Alverin will coach the defensemen after Doug Huda was fired.
It’s unclear whether Alverin or Benoit Desrosiers will be in charge of the penalty kill, but the penalty kill was also one of Houda’s responsibilities.
Alberin played for the Devils under Coach Lamoriello in the 1990s and 2000s, winning two Stanley Cups, and also worked with the organization from 2007-2015 as an assistant with both the NHL club and the AHL’s Albany Devils.
He followed Lamoriello to Toronto and worked for the Leafs as a pro scout for two seasons from 2016-2018.
Since then, the Swede has worked with the Swiss national program, coaching the Swiss as an assistant at tournaments such as the Olympics, World Championships and World Juniors.
During his eight seasons with the team, the Swiss team won silver medals at two world championships, in 2018 and 2024.
