Islanders Make Major Line Changes Ahead of Game Against Flyers
The Islanders showed up in Philadelphia with a noticeably revamped lineup.
Following a disappointing 5-0 loss to the Sabers at home on Saturday, the coaching staff decided to make adjustments to all four lines for Monday’s matchup against the Flyers. Cal Ritchie was sidelined with a lower-body injury.
Ritchie had been called up by the team on a daily basis, and Simon Holmstrom also missed some games due to illness.
To fill Ritchie’s spot, Mark Gacom was brought back, and coach Patrick Roy opted to reunite Gacom’s fourth line with Casey Sikas and Kyle McClain, who had previously enjoyed considerable success together.
Anders Lee and Maxim Tsyplakov, who were initially set to be healthy scratches, ended up playing on the third line alongside Jean-Gabriel Pageau. Jonathan Drouin joined Mathieu Barzal and Anthony Duclair, while Max Shabanov moved onto the first line with Bo Horvat and Emil Heineman.
This fresh lineup yielded significant results, helping the Islanders secure a 4-0 victory.
“We’re trying to mix a little bit of everything,” Roy shared with reporters in Philadelphia before the game. “Bo has played well with Haney, so I don’t mind putting a player like Xavi there. Virgie has also performed well with Anthony Duclair. But, honestly, the line with Anders hasn’t been delivering as effectively as we’d like.”
The configuration of lines was still adjusting right up until moments before the game, as Holmstrom had skated with Barzal during the morning practice, which led to further changes when he was scratched.
Pageau, after scoring his second goal, noted the importance of communication on the ice. “When you’re talking a lot out there, it really helps everyone know where each other is. If one guy gets caught, we’re quick to support him,” he explained.
Following the loss on Saturday, the Islanders faced the possibility of a three-game losing streak for just the third time this season, marking a rare downturn for the team.
Interestingly, Ilya Sorokin recorded only 21 saves in this shutout, which was his lowest since a 14-save performance against the Coyotes back in October 2023.
It’s true that consistent winning combinations have been elusive for the Islanders, and they’ve been juggling lines for a while now.
One game, however, might not be enough to draw any conclusions. But, hey, it’s at least a promising sign.
