Islanders deepen Rangers' struggles at home with shutout victory

Islanders Dominate Rangers in 5-0 Victory

On Saturday, the Rangers aimed to secure a long-awaited victory at home, while the Islanders looked to shake off a frustrating loss to the Wild from the previous day.

Thanks to Ilya Sorokin’s impressive 34-save shutout, the Islanders left Madison Square Garden with a convincing 5-0 win, marking their first victory since March 17, 2022.

For the Rangers, a strange sequence of losses at home seemed to continue, rendering scoring almost impossible. They could only hope that an early surge of chances would lead to a breakthrough soon.

“We’re all human,” remarked Rangers coach Mike Sullivan. “Our group is proud, and this really weighs on us. Winning at home has been elusive—if it doesn’t affect you, there’s something wrong.”

As the game progressed, the crowd at Madison Square Garden grew restless, even booing the Rangers as they exited for the second intermission, seeing the Islanders take control.

Bo Horvat scored his second goal of the night with a power play shot set up by Jonathan Drouin, extending the lead to 3-0 late in the second period. This marked Horvat’s 11th goal of the season, temporarily putting him at the top of the NHL scoring charts.

With Kyle Dubas watching from the press box again, Horvat’s two-goal showing added yet another positive note for Canada’s Olympic hockey aspirations.

As Sorokin maintained his solid performance through the final period, the Rangers were left without a comeback opportunity, resulting in a scoreless streak for them for the fifth time in seven home games.

Late contributions from Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Anders Lee pushed the score further into an embarrassing realm for the Rangers. Meanwhile, the Islanders showed resilience after a rocky start, delivering one of their most balanced performances of the season.

“This is the complete opposite of yesterday,” Emil Heinemann shared. “We made it tough for them, we were effective offensively, and our defense was solid.”

Following an energetic showing at UBS Arena the day before, Patrick Roy plans several changes for the Islanders as they embark on a seven-game road trip, but the team’s focus remains unchanged.

The Islanders took a bit to adjust, but as the game unfolded, it became clear the scoreboard favored them. Heinemann opened the scoring at 10:29 with Horvat’s help, and a backhand from Drouin with just seconds left in the first doubled that lead.

As the matchup continued, the new lineup found its rhythm, which was particularly evident in Romanov’s performance, who faced challenges earlier this season.

“You often go with your instincts about what’s best for the team,” Roy noted. “Everyone was focused, and I’d say it was a great performance overall.”

The final result was something the Islanders could proudly showcase—a comprehensive team effort.

Boasting efficiency on the penalty kill, converting on power plays, and playing with elevated intensity compared to the day before, the Islanders truly earned their victory. It wasn’t flawless, but a 5-0 scoreline is certainly something to celebrate.

“We refused to be complacent,” Horvat emphasized. “We kept pressing. They’ve often had our number in previous matches, but tonight felt distinct. We maintained our aggression the whole game.”
