Disappointing Homecoming for Islanders
Well, that was a tough one to digest.
Maybe it was a bit predictable, considering how the Islanders had just dazzled fans by winning six out of seven on their road trip. Still, Saturday’s game at UBS Arena, which ended in a 2-1 loss against a struggling Blues team, certainly wasn’t the welcome home they had hoped for.
The plan was to beat the post-road trip fatigue by playing, essentially, on the same time zone. But that theory—well, it didn’t play out as expected.
It felt like the Islanders were running on a slowed internet connection, just lagging behind the action.
Throughout much of the game, they were simply outmatched in their defensive zone. Their passes often went sailing past teammates, rendering many attempts ineffective.
Meanwhile, the Blues, coming off four consecutive losses, crowded the Islanders in the offensive zone, executing an effective forecheck. It didn’t help that Jordan Binnington, despite a rough season, faced little pressure from the Islanders and was able to keep them to the perimeter, making it hard for New York to get clean shots off.
A significant factor was their struggle around both nets. The Blues’ Pius Suter capitalized on a rebound during the second period, boxing out Tony DeAngelo before pushing the loose puck in.
At this point, the score was 2-0, and while the Islanders hoped to create some momentum, it just never clicked. It took until less than four minutes left in the game for Anders Lee to finally find the net, getting a rebound off Kyle Palmieri’s shot.
There was a brief moment when it seemed like they had equalized, only for Bo Horvat’s goal to be waved off due to interference with Binnington.
Just to make things a bit more confusing, Jonathan Drouin then received a double-minor penalty for a high stick, which gave the Islanders a power play. But they have had quite a tough time capitalizing on such opportunities this year, and this time was no exception; they couldn’t find a way to score to push the game into overtime.
Despite having more possession in the final period, rushing opportunities were few and far between. Binnington made a solid save against a 2-on-1 opportunity from Lee, the best the Islanders managed to generate all game.
Offensively, the team struggled to penetrate the defense and routinely found themselves pushed away from scoring chances.
Ilya Sorokin continued to perform well in goal, which was basically the only reason the game remained close.
Looking back, this was a tough game to assess for the Islanders, now sitting at 12-8-2. Sure, one could chalk it up to being the first game back home after a demanding trip, but it’s hard to feel too optimistic after losing to a team that hasn’t had the best run either.
With six upcoming home games, starting with a matchup against the Kraken, they won’t have the luxury of dwelling on this loss for too long.
