Islanders Hire Pete DeBoer as New Head Coach
After a year-long pause in the coaching carousel, it was expected someone would snap up Pete DeBoer this cycle. The Islanders have indeed taken that step, officially hiring DeBoer on Sunday to take over from Patrick Roy, who was dismissed with just four regular-season games to go.
DeBoer has reportedly inked a four-year contract that begins after his current deal expires, suggesting that general manager Mathieu Darche sees him staying put on the Islanders’ bench well into the future—perhaps until Matthew Schaefer is signed to his second contract at the age of 22.
DeBoer’s immediate task will be to lift the Islanders from their current struggles and push for a playoff spot. These upcoming seasons are crucial if the team hopes to secure a championship with the core group they’re nurturing.
This hiring is, arguably, one of the most significant moves Darche has made as general manager.
At 57, DeBoer boasts a strong coaching resume. He took the Stars to the Western Conference Finals in his three years there and previously led both the Devils and Sharks to the Stanley Cup Finals—he even has a 9-0 record in Game 7s. Additionally, he has been an assistant coach for Team Canada during major tournaments, showcasing his broad experience.
Now, as he prepares to debut with the Islanders, the only notable absence from his impressive record is a Stanley Cup trophy.
Despite a four-day delay before his first game, DeBoer’s fresh perspective could be key. While some minor adjustments to the Islanders’ play style may be possible, overhauling the entire system right now would be quite ambitious. Interestingly, he does not have an assistant coach joining him at this point. Benoît Desrosiers, Ray Bennett, Bob Boughner, and Sergei Naumovs continue in their roles following the recent changes.
Nevertheless, the implications of this decision shouldn’t be underestimated. The need for a new voice is evident, especially given the impression that Roy’s methods were not resonating with the team. Making this change now—rather than waiting—also signals that Darche might not shy away from making further roster adjustments when the offseason arrives.
That said, it’s still uncertain if these moves will suffice to propel the Islanders into playoff contention.
