Islanders Dominate Red Wings in Detroit

DETROIT — The Islanders are proving themselves to be a formidable force.

After a grueling seven-game road trip, fatigue was setting in. My legs felt heavy, and honestly, everyone just wanted to be back home in their own beds. Yet, the Islanders walked into Detroit and delivered a stunning 5-0 victory over the Red Wings, who were at the top of the Atlantic Division when the night began.

That win marked their sixth triumph in seven games during a trip that covered four time zones, with every opponent vying for playoff spots.

Since losing their initial three games, the Islanders have bounced back with a 12-4-2 record, boasting a .777 win percentage.

It’s clear now—they’re a legitimate contender in the Metropolitan Division, if not for the Stanley Cup itself. Their speed and skill have surpassed many expectations.

What transpired on the ice at Little Caesars Arena demonstrated just that. Besides some sluggishness on the power play, the Islanders controlled the game against the Red Wings.

The fourth line, which has thrived since Max Shabanov returned, has become vital for the team, almost like a nod to the days of Barry Trotz coaching. Shabanov kicked things off with a breakaway goal from Cal Ritchie early in the game and soon netted another by getting a puck past goalie John Gibson during a faceoff.

Shabanov, alongside Cizikas, contributed to a second-period goal from Matt Barzal by applying intense forechecking that set it all up nicely.

Bo Horvat made it 4-0 with a well-placed one-timer from the right circle, marking a point where Gibson looked utterly lost and fans began booing.

Shabanov continued his impressive play, weaving through defenders to score his second goal, completing a four-point night.

The Islanders’ top nine players performed well, yet it was the fourth line that really brought the team together. Shabanov and Ritchie clicked instantly, while Cizikas has shown significant improvement after a rocky start to the season.

The Islanders were relentless, forechecking intensely and winning battles against a Red Wings squad that, while youthful and seemingly energetic, was struggling by the game’s end. Adam Boqvist stepped up in place of the injured Alexander Romanov and celebrated his 100th career point with an assist on Ritchie’s goal.

Ilya Sorokin was stellar in goal, stopping 29 shots, including challenging attempts from Lucas Raymond and Nate Danielson. His remarkable performance continued under the guidance of new goalie coach Sergei Naumovs, achieving his second shutout of the season and inching closer to a franchise record.

As the Islanders prepare to return home after this lengthy road stretch, they’re set for back-to-back games against the Blues and Kraken over the weekend.

Attendance has been an ongoing issue since their move to UBS Arena, primarily due to the team’s past performance not matching the arena’s potential.

But that’s changing.
