Islanders secure victory against Devils before Olympic break

The Islanders and Their Hard-Fought Victory

The Islanders have been struggling to find their top form for a while now, and it seems that trend continued on Thursday.

In their last game before the NHL’s Olympic break, Bo Horvat, heading to Italy to play for Team Canada, helped secure a late win, leading the Islanders to a 3-1 victory over the Devils at the Prudential Center.

This break comes at a crucial time, as the team is feeling the pressure from a compact schedule that has weighed heavily over the last month.

During the game, it appeared they might finally succumb to the mounting stress.

As the game went on, the Islanders ramped up their efforts. They managed 38 shots on goal, but only found success after a quiet 40 minutes, with just seven shots in total. The Devils, missing Jack Hughes, created opportunities off the rush despite the Islanders’ struggles, making it seem like their focus was more on external distractions than on the game itself.

Thanks to Ilya Sorokin and Adam Pelech, they managed to block a dangerous shot from Leni Hamenaho at a critical moment in the second period, keeping the score tied at 1 as they approached the final period.

In the third, the Islanders regrouped with Ondrej Palat, Mark Gutkom, and Simon Holmstrom generating some promising chances.

However, it felt like both teams were somewhat out of sync, and the Islanders weren’t capitalizing on the few opportunities they had.

Then, with just over three minutes remaining, Bo Horvat won a faceoff in the Islanders’ zone and skillfully backhanded the puck past Jake Allen, giving his team a 2-1 advantage.

The Islanders’ representative athletes headed into the break on a positive note, and an empty-net goal from Matt Barzal just 23 seconds from the end confirmed the victory.

In the first period, the Islanders controlled most of the play, with Casey Cicacas opening the scoring, thanks to a rebound from a Kyle McClain shot at 6:30 in the second.

However, the Devils’ quick transitions began to trouble the Islanders. New Jersey managed to tie it up as Nico Isier scored off Jesper Blatt’s pass at 18:26, just after Ryan Pulock had narrowly missed blocking a shot.

Returning from a lower-body injury, Cal Ritchie brought some energy, but the Islanders mostly played a perimeter game during this match.

To put it less kindly, their puck management left much to be desired, with Jonathan Drouin making one of the more notable turnovers this season at the end of the first period.

Emil Heinemann created several good chances yet struggled to convert them into goals.

Still, the fourth line put in a solid performance. J.G. Pageau excelled in faceoffs, and the combination of Anders Lee and Simon Holmstrom became notably effective.

The top line didn’t do much during the second period, but they came alive in the third.

While the team’s overall play wasn’t aesthetically pleasing, surviving the last few weeks feels like a small triumph.

Now, it’s time to rest, recharge, and hopefully, when the Islanders return, they’ll be ready to not just survive but to truly thrive.
