Welcome and Overview

Hello and welcome to the Guardian's continuing coverage of the Israel-Gaza war and the wider crisis in the Middle East.

Israeli forces bombed a tent village in Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip early Tuesday, reportedly killing dozens of Palestinians. The Israeli military said the strike targeted a Hamas headquarters.

Residents and medical sources said at least four missiles hit a tent camp in the al-Mawasi area, a designated humanitarian zone and home to many Palestinians who fled from other parts of the exclave.

We'll go into more detail about this later, but first here's a quick rundown of the day's major events:

  • The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor, said 25 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes in Syria. Syrian state media put the death toll at 16, with 40 injured. Iran described the airstrike as a “criminal” attack on Syria. The main target was believed to be a military research center in Masyaf linked to Syria's chemical weapons and ballistic missile programs, but explosions were also heard in Damascus, Homs and Tartus.

  • Benny Gantz, leader of the center-right National Unity Party and a former defense minister, was reported as saying Israel should shift its focus to Hezbollah and the Lebanese border.“The Hamas story is old news,” Gantz reportedly said at a Middle East forum in Washington, D.C. Rather, he said, “the story of Iran and its proxies in the region and what they are trying to do is the real issue.”

  • UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said ending the war in Gaza was a top priority. He called on states to take action over Israel's “blatant disregard” for international law in the occupied Palestinian territories.

  • The Palestinian Authority has held a funeral for an American-Turkish activist who witnesses say was shot dead by Israeli forces last week during a demonstration against settlements in the occupied West Bank.Dozens of mourners, including several senior officials from Western-backed governments, attended the funeral in Nablus of Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi, a 26-year-old Seattle native and Turkish citizen.

The Australian government has also explicitly supported the UK's decision to restrict arms exports to Israel, putting it at odds with the US, which has reportedly privately warned the UK against the move. Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong told The Guardian Australia that “Australia is working with partners, including the UK, to press for real change to be seen in the situation in Gaza.”
