Israeli cycling team prevented from participating in Giro dell'Emilia over concerns about Palestine protests

Israeli Cycling Team Excluded from Italian Races Amid Protests

The Israeli Premier Tech Cycling Team has been withdrawn from upcoming races in Italy, mainly due to concerns surrounding potentially disruptive Pro-Palestinian protests.

Race organizers for Giro Dell’emilia, set for October 4th, made this decision after various protests hindered the recent Vuelta in Spain, particularly affecting the presence of the Israeli team. It was noted that a significant number of the last 11 days of races in the Vuelta were either cut short or halted altogether, prompted by an estimated protest presence during the final stage of the month.

Protesters have indicated that their actions are aimed at denouncing Israeli military operations in Gaza, following Hamas’ deadly attack on Israel earlier this month.

Bologna Councillor Roberta Lee Calzi, a local politician, played a key role in the decision to exclude the Israeli team. She expressed that, “We believe that sports embody universal values of sharing, fair competition, and solidarity among people.” Calzi mentioned the decision reflects a shared sentiment within the community.

The team is co-owned by Israeli Canadian billionaire Sylvan Adams, whose primary sponsor, Premier Tech, based in Quebec, expressed hope for rebranding the team soon.

Additionally, there are reports that UEFA, Europe’s major soccer organization, may vote to suspend Israeli teams from international competitions amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The committee is expected to largely support this motion, which would prevent Israeli national and club teams from participating in events including the forthcoming World Cup.
