Israeli Civilians Conduct Training for Potential Terrorist Attacks
In a recent drill, members of Israel’s Civil Defense Forces practiced their response to a simulated terrorist infiltration. This training is aimed at preparing border communities for potential threats, especially in light of the tragic events on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants invaded Israel, resulting in the deaths of around 1,200 people.
During the exercise, which included participation from local civil defense teams and was conducted by Magen48 with the support of the Israel Defense Forces, scenarios included a hypothetical attack on a kindergarten in a kibbutz. Participants were tasked with executing a response while ensuring the safety of children amidst complexities like poor visibility and the necessity to eliminate threats efficiently. At one point, a mock grenade detonated, injuring a civil defense member, but others successfully neutralized the simulated attackers.
Historically, earlier sessions focused on fundamental skills like weapon operation and team communication, and responses became progressively intricate, including drills inside buildings under emergency conditions. Of course, to maintain safety during these community-based practices, live ammunition was prohibited, and prior notifications were sent to residents about the drill.
The training roster featured 47 individuals, including soldiers and medics from the Northern Gaza Strip brigade. An instructor known as Mr. T, who had to conceal his full identity for security reasons, mentioned that the program faced significant challenges initially. He noted that the team comprised both combat-experienced soldiers and those without past military roles, highlighting the importance of familiarizing everyone with the operational process and weapon safety.
One critical lesson learned from the October 7 incident was the isolation faced by many private security forces during the attack. Mr. T emphasized that effective training encourages collaboration before any direct engagement with threats.
The initiative aims to create a standardized operational strategy, allowing neighboring communities to work together effectively during emergencies. The goal is for local teams to handle initial threats until military forces arrive, ensuring a cohesive response.
Magen48, founded in July 2024 and named in honor of the 48 first responders killed on October 7, has successfully trained around 1,500 civilians to manage life-threatening scenarios, including terror attacks and medical crises.
Ehud Doliben, a co-founder and counterterrorism expert, along with partners Ali Briggs and Mike Aaron, developed a program that provides extensive training to all 67 communities in the Gaza Strip. So far, they have executed more than 550 training sessions, illustrating the scale of their commitment.
This latest drill commenced with an alert about eight terrorists infiltrating the kibbutz, prompting the civil defense teams to spring into action, taking positions to combat the threat. Measurements of response times and each step of the process, from alerting the populace to coordinating evacuations, were closely monitored.
Briggs pointed out that while civilian responders showed immense bravery during the October 7 attacks, they lacked proper training and resources. This observation underscores the necessity of building well-prepared teams for future events.
Ultimately, the aim is to cultivate a resilient and unified community. Richard Kemp, a retired British colonel who observed the recent training, stated that preventing another incident like October 7 is the primary goal. He expressed that readiness is crucial, especially when facing adversaries with significant capabilities.
Kemp considered this drill among the most intricate he had witnessed, stressing the importance of such preparations in ensuring community trust in local security efforts.
